Line up at Kyoto station to exchange for JR pass is at least a 30 minute wait and it canNOT be exchanged at any JR office There is a JR east office and there are two JR west offices. Only exchangeable at JR west. JR west office is very slow sometimes, depending on which staff you get. Booking trains thar require reservation tickets with the green machine can be quite a bit of lineup too, expect lineup at Kyoto station is what seems to be my experience.

The cherry blossoms in Takayama City bloomed a little later this year, but they were still in full bloom on April 20th. The whole city is very leisurely, with mostly Europeans and Americans. The entire itinerary was just right. I hope I can come and roam around by myself next time and stay for two or three days. It will be a different experience.
