Gokayama, Shirakawa-go Gassho Village & Hida Takayama Day Trip | Kanazawa

Great tour, run by JR Company, and covered three sites. Tour guide Hanako speaks mainly Japanese but uses Google Translate to explain key info to us. Both her and the driver are so professional. We all had a great time. Bus is clean. Driver has great skills maneuvering the windy roads. Arrival/departure are punctual and precise. Highly recommended.

Trip was well-planned. It was hassle-free. It checked many of the places to go around the area. No problem if you do not understand Japanese as they will issue out the audio guide although we did not use it eventually as it is the places and scenery that mattered most.

But I hope it is longer.

Great destination, well-paced, on time. Participant can enjoy each destination at their own free will for approximately 1,5 ~ 2 hours, which is more than enough, in my opinion. Guide gave us map of each destination beforehand to make it easier for us to find the way. English map available. Guide could only speak japanese and a little bit of english. But they provide an interpreting tool.

Gokayama is beautiful but the time is poorly planned. you first stop to watch an interesting play but because of that you are going to arrive to gokayama just before the last bus that goes up to the viewpoint, and it's a small bus, so only a few people can fit even if you run there. you can walk but it's quite steep and takes a while, so later you are rushing to see the village, because the bus departs early to go to takayama. In my opinion, Takayama is cute but shouldn't be part of the trip as it steals a significant time from the much better Gokayama area. If you go to Kanazawa or Kyoto, then Takayama is unnecessary. Instead of Takayama, it would be better to spend more time in Gokayama or visit another nearby village on the way back, instead of going around to takayama. Also the lady of the tour is talking non stop the whole trip, and while she is nice, a lot of talk is unnecessary.

No need exchange ticket , it is convenient to get a ride. if the tour guide can provide translation audio it would be better.

We booked this trip to see a bit of the countryside of Japan, and it surely met our expectation. The traditional houses in Gokayama and Shirakawago are very different from the typical Japanese style, and hearing and seeing the traditional dance in Gokayama was interesting. The view over Shirakawago village is unique, and strolling through the streets of Hida Takayama is nice, although you will need to have olympic running capabilities to see all the attractions listed, so make a selection beforehand. The guide only spoke Japanese, which we can’t understand, but she was very enthousiast and even performed a few traditional Japanese songs while on the bus.
